DESCRIPTION: EPW - Charles Goode, London, verge fusee, 43mm, likely 22K gold (tested as at least 18K) OF original inner case only bearing London hallmarks for 1728, incuse "W S" marking for casemaker William Sherwood, shutter has been added to rear over winding aperture, watch originally would have been with an outer pair case which is no longer present, signed gold champleve dial, KWKS, verge escapement, gilt mvt with pierced and foliate scrolled balance cock with grotesque mask at its neck, no visible mvt s#. Gross weight of assembled watch 57.7 dwt (89.7 g). Charles Good(e) is listed in Brian Loomes' "Watchmakers and Clockmakers of the World" as having been admitted to the Clockmakers' Company in 1686 and as having lived until 1730.
CONDITION: Mvt: NR, fully wound, balance is gummy and not ticking with reverse pressure at fusee, excellent cosmetic mvt condition overall, balance cock with some toning to its foot and its table, otherwise excellent gilt tone, few small micro-fine scratches; excellent dial, some darkening to area just inside the 3 to 5 numerals, loss of wax to numerals; excellent hands; outer case is missing; inner case has had a shutter added over its winding aperture, inner case shows light wear, profuse fine to micro-fine scratches to rear, some scattered dents and dings with the largest at the edge at 2:30 and the majority of the remainder around perimeter of rear; bow pivots freely, pendant with play at its junction; domed glass crystal with scattered scratches.
